*Auto Accident Facts:  Injuries on Texas roadways occur with alarming frequency.  According to statistics gathered by the Texas Department of Public Safety, there were 3,475 fatalities from car accidents in Texas in 2006.  That compared with 42,642 fatalities from auto accidents nationally.  Of those fatal car accidents in Texas, 1,677 of the car accidents were caused by drunk drivers.  That amounts to almost half of all auto accident fatalities.  Large trucks were involved in 498 of the fatalities.  Travis County ranked fifth of all cities statewide in the number of fatalities from car accidents (103 deaths).  Harris County ranked first with 324 car accident fatalities.  As reported in the Austin American Statesman on January 26, 2009, there were 95 fatalities from car accidents in Travis County in 2008, up slightly from 2007, according to law enforcement records.  On roads within the City of Austin, there were 59 deaths for auto accidents last year.  Investigators saw a rise in motorcycle-related accident deaths, however, spurred by a summer of nearly $4-per-gallon gas.  The number of motorcycle accident deaths rose from 15 in 2007 to 22 in 2008. Eighteen of those accident deaths were within Austin city limits.  Six of those killed wore helmets.  Sixteen were drivers, and two were passengers. The number of accident deaths of pedestrians and bicyclists declined. There were 25 pedestrians killed in 2007, and 18 in 2008. The number of bicyclists killed fell to one last year from two the year before. The deadliest hour was between 2 and 3 a.m., when 17 of the car accident fatalities occurred. In 2007, 12 fatal car accidents occurred during that hour. Outside the city limits last year, there were 36 car accident deaths, up from 33 in 2007, according to Texas Department of Public Safety records.
